Spooky Finger Food - Witch Fingers Recipe

Spooky Finger Food - Witch Fingers Recipe

Witches fingers serve as delightful finger food for Halloween. Halloween is a beloved spooky season, and everyone is familiar with witches cookies. However, this particular recipe focuses on a savory variant made from pizza dough.

For the past two weeks, I have been exploring Pinterest and was captivated by these Witches fingers cookies. My daughter was excited when she saw them, prompting us to create our own version, albeit with a slight modification.

Typically, witches fingers are crafted from either pretzel sticks or sugar cookie dough. However, I chose to innovate a bit as I was in search of a savory finger food option. I selected pizza dough and incorporated cheddar cheese into the mixture, resulting in a fantastic outcome.

In this recipe, I am utilizing pre-made pizza dough that I had previously frozen from an earlier pizza preparation. The process was relatively straightforward and certainly reduced the overall time required. Nevertheless, pizza dough can be purchased at any grocery store, and if you prefer not to use pizza dough, puff pastry is also a viable alternative. Puff pastry can be found in the frozen food aisle of your grocery store.

Ingredients required for witches fingers:
  • pizza dough
  • cheddar cheese
  • raw almonds
  • small egg or garlic butter
  • A few drops of food coloring
Regarding the food coloring, it is not mandatory to use any. If you prepare your witch fingers with the natural hue of the pizza dough and add some ketchup around the fingernail, they will still appear sufficiently spooky. My daughter wished to incorporate multiple colors, resulting in a somewhat messy appearance for the witches fingers dough, which I found appealing as it looked quite realistic.

You may utilize any type of firm cheese, such as mozzarella, cheddar, or more robust varieties like Gruyère. The cheese should be sliced. Pre-shredded cheese tends to be more challenging to incorporate within the dough. If you prefer not to use cheese, that is perfectly acceptable. These witches' fingers can be enjoyed with various spices and herbs, such as garlic butter. Additionally, you may choose to dip them in salsa or cheese sauce if desired.

Essentially, these witches' fingers resemble breadsticks crafted from pizza dough. Upon removing them from the oven, they are delightfully crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, filled with delicious cheese. A small almond serves as a nail, which is not only a traditional touch for witches' fingers but also adds a pleasant crunch from the baked almond.

Instructions for shaping the witches' fingers
The technique for rolling is quite straightforward. While some individuals prefer to roll the dough on a wooden board, I find it more effective to roll it between the palms of my hands. Always incorporate a small amount of flour to prevent the dough from adhering to your hands.

Begin by adding a few drops of food coloring to the dough and knead it for several minutes to ensure the color is evenly distributed. Divide the dough into ten equal portions and roll each piece to approximately four inches in length and half an inch in width. Add a few drops of food coloring.

Slice the dough lengthwise without cutting all the way through, insert the cheese strips, and seal the dough. Roll it again to reshape. Make small incisions with a knife in the center and on either side of the dough, then press with your fingers on each side to form knuckles.

Take an almond and insert it into the dough on one side. Arrange the fingers on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Apply an egg wash or garlic butter and bake for 20-25 minutes in a preheated oven at 355F/177C.

Tips and tricks
TIP: Cut the dough into smaller pieces, as they may appear small but will puff up in the oven. My initial finger pieces were so large that they resembled swollen witch fingers. Although they were delicious, their appearance was quite odd with the puffiness. Therefore, I recommend rolling the fingers to a length of 4 inches and a width of 1/2 inch.

I have also prepared brownie cupcakes, which I adorned with a marshmallow spider net. For the brownie cupcake recipe, click here, and for the marshmallow spider net, take a few marshmallows and place them in a small microwave-safe bowl. Microwave for 30 seconds and allow to cool for a minute.

Next, take the melted marshmallow in your hands (this is where it becomes sticky) and attempt to tear it apart with your fingers, then place it over the brownie cupcakes. Once the marshmallow is in your hands, you will understand how sticky it can become!
