Witch's Finger Cookies for Halloween


INGREDIENTS
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 3/4 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup whole blanched almonds
  • red food coloring, preferably paste type

INSTRUCTIONS
Preheat oven to 325° F. Combine dry ingredients. Lightly grease a cookie sheet.
In a large bowl, beat together butter, sugar, egg, almond extract and vanilla, beat in dry ingredients. Cover and refrigerate dough for 30 minutes.

If you want to paint the nails first, use some red food coloring that's been diluted with water and brush on with a clean artist's brush.
Working with one-quarter of the dough at a time and keeping remaining dough refrigerated, roll heaping teaspoons full of dough into finger shape for each cookie. Press an almond firmly into one end for nail. Squeeze in center to create a knuckle shape and use a paring knife make slashes in several places to form knuckle.

Place cookies on the prepared cookie sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes or until pale golden. Let cool for three minutes. If desired, lift up almond and squeeze red decorator gel onto nail bed and press almond back in place so gel oozes out from underneath.

Remove from cookie sheet and let cool on a wire rack. Repeat with remaining dough.
Note: Make cookies smaller than you think they need to be, as they spread when cooking. Our witch has fat fingers because we didn't heed our own advice. The witch finger recipe is ready...enjoy the halloween party.....!

Ingredients

* 1 can refrigerated breadstick dough
* 1 pepperoni stick
* Dried rosemary, to taste
* If you add a raisin, it looks like a big wart on the "finger" after its baked.

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Separate breadsticks and place on greased cookie sheet.
2. Cut pepperoni into fingernail shapes and press into dough.
3. Cut knuckle marks into "fingers" and sprinkle with rosemary to create a hairy-knuckle look.
4. Bake according to package directions.
5. If you want a warted finger, add the raisin before baking!

Ingredients

  • 1/4 lb (about 1 c packed) shredded extra-sharp cheddar cheese
  • 2 tbsps cornmeal
  • 5 tbsps butter
  • 3/4 c all-purpose flour
  • Kosher salt
  • 30 sliced almonds
  • 1 large egg

Instructions

  • In a food processor/blender or bowl, cheese, flour, whirl or rub together butter, & cornmeal until the mixture has the texture of wet sand.
  • Add egg & whirl or stir with a fork until dough holds together.
  • Scrape dough onto a sheet of cooking paper or parchment, 12 to 14 in.
  • wide & about 14 in. long.
  • Top with another equal-sized sheet of paper & pat dough into a 1/2-in. -thick circle.
  • Wrap in plastic & freeze 15 mins, or put in the fridge up to 3 days.
  • Roll dough into a rectangle about 8 in. wide & 10 in.long, working carefully to avoid creases in paper.
  • Return to freezer for 15 mins.
  • Meanwhile, preheat your trusty oven to 350°.
  • Peel off top paper & use a sharp knife to cut the dough into 30 strips, each about 1/2 in.
  • thick & 5 in. long.
  • Place each strip on a large baking sheet.
  • Sprinkle top with salt to taste, then use your fingers to round the top of each strip into a fingertip shape.
  • Use a sharp knife to score shallow "knuckle" lines in each finger, then press an almond "nail" into the tip.
  • If you like, bend each finger in places to make it look knobby.
  • Bake the fingers until an even light brown, about 15 mins.
  • Transfer to a rack to cool.

* 1 cup confectioners' sugar
* 1 egg
* 1 teaspoon almond extract
* 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
* 2 2/3 cups all-purpose flour
* 1 teaspoon baking powder
* 1 teaspoon salt
* 3/4 cup whole almonds
* 1 (.75 ounce) tube red decorating gel

INSTRUCTIONS
1. Combine the butter, sugar, egg, almond extract, and vanilla extract in a mixing bowl. Beat together with an electric mixer; gradually add the flour, baking powder, and salt, continually beating; refrigerate 20 to 30 minutes.
2. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Lightly grease baking sheets.
3. Remove dough from refrigerator in small amounts. Scoop 1 heaping teaspoon at a time onto a piece of waxed paper. Use the waxed paper to roll the dough into a thin finger-shaped cookie. Press one almond into one end of each cookie to give the appearance of a long fingernail. Squeeze cookie near the tip and again near the center of each to give the impression of knuckles. You can also cut into the dough with a sharp knife at the same points to help give a more finger-like appearance. Arrange the shaped cookies on the baking sheets.
4. Bake in the preheated oven until the cookies are slightly golden in color, 20 to 25 minutes.
5. Remove the almond from the end of each cookie; squeeze a small amount of red decorating gel into the cavity; replace the almond to cause the gel to ooze out around the tip of the cookie. The witch finger recipe is ready...enjoy !
